Lucky That Way          Click here for sound sample
Features Clint Hoover on harmonica, Jason Kapel on bass, Michael Loonan on keyboard

I know an old fella with a farm out in West Tennessee
The gov’nor pulled up in a limo one day and said, “Please sell your farm to me.”
Well they fixed up his house, left him 40 acres and put up a factory
He got 12 million bucks and with his kind of luck, he’s as happy as he can be

Chorus:
Some folks are just lucky; good things fall right into their hands
Yeah so lucky, like it’s part of some master plan
They got the one thing everybody longs for, but very few will know
When you’re lucky that way, there ain’t nothin’ to say, you just pick up your money and go

Got a friend down in Georgia--played poker in a high-stakes game
He was doin’ all right with his winnings that night; he played like his cards were aflame
Somebody bet shares in an oil well, my buddy shrugged and said "It’s all the same"
You know he won that hand, then the well came in; he had a fortune in his name

Some folks are just lucky; good things fall right into their hands
Yeah so lucky, like it’s part of some master plan
They got the one thing everybody longs for, but very few will know
When you’re lucky that way, there ain’t nothin’ to say, you just pick up your money and go.

Looking for You          Click here for sound sample
With Jason Kapel on bass and Michael Loonan on keyboard

If I didn’t have your love at the center of my heart, I know exactly what I’d do
Don’t know where I’d end, but I do know where I’d start: I’d begin by looking for you

I’d look for a woman who loves to go travelin’, especially close to the sea
With the sound of the surf and the smile on her face
Telling me that’s where she wants to be

I’d look for a woman who’s witty and clever, who reads and keeps up with the news
She wouldn’t be afraid to tell me how she feels I believe that she’d be just like you

If I didn’t have your love at the center of my heart, I know exactly what I’d do
Don’t know where I’d end, but I do know where I’d start: I’d begin by looking for you

Like you, she’d be a woman whose long, silky hair
Has a touch of copper color glowing warmly in the light
And skin soft and smooth as she presses against me
While we caress each other in the night

If I didn’t have your love at the center of my heart, I know exactly what I’d do
Don’t know where I’d end, but I do know where I’d start: I’d begin by looking for you
Don’t know where I’d end, but I do know where I’d start: I’d begin by looking
Spend my time looking, search the whole world looking for you

Eye to Eye           Click here for sound sample
A duet with singer/songwriter Rebekka Fisher, Michael Loonan on Fender Rhodes and Jason Kapel on bass

HE: Sometimes I wonder if we’ll ever agree
SHE: When there’s two ways to do things there’s one for you and one for me
HE: I like the movies
SHE: I like to read
HE: I like to dance
SHE: But honey, I don’t like the way you lead
He&She: Even though we don’t see eye to eye, baby I’m gonna love you till I die

SHE: When it comes to money, you haven’t a clue
HE: But you always know just what to do
HE: I say let’s save it, ‘cause that’s a good bet
SHE: But I think it’s better to eradicate our debt
He&She: Even though we don’t see eye to eye, baby I’m gonna love you till I die

HE: A man finds a woman, he’s sure she’ll never change
SHE: But she does (oh yes she does)
SHE: And a woman finds a man, she thinks that boy will change
HE: But eighty-five years later that old man is still the same!
He&She: Oh yeah!

SHE: Folks say come visit, we say we’ll try
HE: You wanna drive, I’d rather fly
SHE: You’d like to go, but I wanna stay
HE: You wanna relax, but honey I’d much prefer to play
He&She: Even though we don’t see eye to eye, baby I’m gonna love you till I die

SHE: You think it’s good, I’m not so sure
HE: You think it’s tainted, but to me it looks pure
SHE: I'm so frustrated, don’t know what to do
HE: I feel the same, honey, sittin’ here & watchin’ you
He&She: Even though we don’t see eye to eye, babe I’m gonna love you till I die

HE: Even though we don’t see eye to eye, baby I’m gonna love you till I die
SHE: Even though we don’t see eye to eye, babe I’m gonna love you till I die
He&She: Even though we don’t see eye to eye, baby I’m still gonna love you till I die

I Wonder If She’s Mine            Click here for sound sample
With Michael Loonan on bass and keyboard

We had once been lovers not so long ago but I heard that you’d found another man
So when we ran into each other outside the corner store
I was surprised when you laughed and shook my hand

Then I saw your child in the stroller looking up with your smile
When you said it was her birthday I counted back the time
I thought of us and this little girl and I asked myself all the while
Can it be? I wonder if she’s mine

I suppose I’ll never know, but I wonder if she’s mine?
There’s so much of her that could have come from me
I couldn’t ask the question; so I guess I’ll never see
But I often stop and wonder if she’s mine

Then your daughter reached up, held my finger, squeezed it tight
When I tickled her she giggled and I met her twinkling eyes
We talked a few more moments, then you walked off out out sight
I watched you go and wondered if she’s mine

Generations          Click here for sound sample
With Jason Kapel on bass

The older generation once organized themselves
They were young then, and devised a better world
But life’s a vicious cycle and rebellion it still swells
As the flag of younger minds is now unfurled

This once-young generation has become the old elite
They’re called the names that they once shouted loud
They are looking at the placards and the costumes in the streets
And the faces that are scowling from the crowd

There will come a mornin’ when the youth will not be young
And the times of which they dreamed will stare at them
For the young will always warn the world that a new age has begun
And as they get older they will bring it in

The youth of yesterday are in control; they make the law
As they once wished & hoped that it would be
But like the ones before them can’t make the changes they foresaw
For a little at a time is all men see

Yes a little at a time is all we see

Return to Love          Click here for sound sample
Featuring Erik Brandt of the Urban Hillbilly Quartet on accordian, Jay Tracy on mandolin and Jason Kapel on bass

Your eyes do not sparkle as they look at me; they look like they don’t like what they see
You seem unhappy wearing that frown; can’t help but believe your love’s falling down

You still speak the words, I’d rather be shown;
That’s the best way to make your love known
It is what you do, it’s not what you say that tells me your love is turning away

Our love will survive if you do as you say and show me you love me that’s the best way
Return to the way we loved at the start; rekindle the flame that’s died in your heart

I’d give anything if you smiled again; return to the way you loved me back then
Show me you love me as you say you do; and then let me show how much I love you

You’ll shine in my eyes for my love is deep; I’ll hold and caress you as you fall asleep
I’ll take your hand to show that I care; whenever you need me I will be there

Our love will survive if you do as you say and show me you love me that’s the best way
Return to the way we loved at the start rekindle the flame that’s died in your heart

It is what you do, it’s not what you say that tells me your love is turning away

Pappy’s Pithy Phrases          Click here for sound sample
Featuring Frank Wing of east-Tennessee Celtic band Sigean on banjo and Jason Kapel on bass (Frank's performance recorded & engineered by Dwight Bishop, Woodhouse Recording, in Dungannon, VA)

My Pappy was a man of few words, but when he spoke it was colorful
He had a phrase for just about every situation
And his words made clear the point of his communication

He’d say I’m happy as if I had good sense, happy as a dog with two tails
And though I’m feeling like I been rode hard and put away wet
I’m all man and a yard wide and when they passed out the brains
I took all that I could get

Y’know Hell was one of the places my Pappy spoke of often
He used that word so much he made people stare
But what other people thought, my Pappy didn’t really care

When a man drove his car Hell bent for leather
Pappy’d say, “Go on, fool, Hell ain’t half full yet.”
But when that man kept speedin’ like a bat out of Hell
He’d say “If brains were water that fool's couldn’t make sand wet”

My Pappy was a man of few words...

The Time (Co-Authored with Harry Rhett)          Click here for sound sample
Featuring Michael Loonan on mellow guitar and Jason Kapel on bass

The time has come to leave you my love, time to leave for awhile
The time has come to leave you my love, time to walk my own mile
I told you that one day I’d go my own way, that one day you’d tell me goodbye
Something inside me says I cannot stay, don’t ask me I can’t tell you why

The times that we spent with each other were good; remember the love that is past
All of those moments I’d save if I could, the good times that went by too fast
But now I must leave those good times behind; I’ll think of the love that we had
Remembering us in a love that was kind, rememb’ring we rarely were sad

My thoughts as a man you may not understand, but I feel I’ve got to be free
To try and be everything I know I can, the man I once thought I could be
I told you that one day I’d go my own way, that one day you’d tell me goodbye
Something inside me says I cannot stay; don’t ask me I can’t tell you why

Don’t ask me I can’t tell you why

Qualified Reciprocation Blues         Click here for sound sample
Featuring Michael Loonan on guitar and keyboard and Jason Kapel on bass

You know I’m crazy ‘bout you baby; want your heart, your soul, your brain
But you need to know more about me, so I just talk to you again
I’m havin’ big trouble baby; I’d like to put you in my shoes
Then you’d know just how it feels these qualified reciprocation blues

When I look at you it moves me; I just love your lovely face
And you say you like me too, but you just gotta have your space
I’m havin’ big trouble baby; I’d like to put you in my shoes
Then you’d know just how it feels these qualified reciprocation blues

I respect your need for caution; You been hurt by other men
But I’d like to get them out yo’ head; this is now, hey, this ain’t then
You got to take it slow; you ain’t under nobody’s gun
Just don’t let it take forever, baby, ‘cause we’re missin’ a lot of fun!

And when you let me love you, it just makes me feel so fine
But the way you feel is not so clear, you say it’s gonna take some time
I’m havin’ big trouble baby; I’d like to put you in my shoes
Then you’d know just how it feels these qualified reciprocation blues

Then you’d know just how it feels these qualified reciprocation blues

Cookie Lovers’ Ramble          Click here for sound sample
With Jason Kapel on bass

Well I’m sittin’ here eatin’ a cookie; got a thousand things demandin’ my time
But I’m sittin’ here eatin’ a cookie; and that natcherly brought you to mind
Seems no matter what I got pullin’ at me, eatin’ cookies makes me think about you
And that’s beginnin’ to pose me some problems, so I’m wondrin’ what I’m gonna do

‘Cause cookies is an object of affection that we both love each day
And eatin’ cookies makes me think about you baby when you’re away
But substitutin’ cookies for your lovin’ honey that ain’t my scene
‘Cause my derriere’s enlargin’ and I’m gettin’ fat, y’know what I mean?

So we need to spend some more time together and I hope that we can work somethin’ out
‘Cause as much as I love eatin’ cookies, I love you much more there’s no doubt
Please save me from the likes of Weight Gateguard,
And that nutri-stuff that don’t taste so fine
Don’t want Skinny Gregg or that Super Trim-Blast, all I need’s a little more of your time

I’m here to tell you my derriere’s enlargin’ I’m gettin’ fat, y’know what I mean?

Lullabye          Click here for sound sample
Featuring John Simmer on flute and Jason Kapel on bass

Sleepy, You/Me sun fell into the sea and stars are peeping through
Star gleam, light stream eyes heavy lead to dream a thought, a smile for you.
When day is over night will wrap around us; I’m not afraid when you are close to me
The sandman works his magic when he’s found us, and carries us away, the world to see.

Sleep world, toes curled dream stories have unfurled And paint us pleasant scenes.
Lines fade, sounds played we drift into the shade to see through gauze-white screens.
Breathe deep, thoughts keep we’ll have the sweetest sleep
And when our dreaming’s done, soft kiss, don’t miss a chance to share in this:
The rising of the sun.

When day is over night will wrap around us; I’m not afraid when you are close to me
The sandman works his magic when he’s found us, and carries us away, the world to see.
Our hearts and souls take flight as we’re set free.
And dreaming feels so right when you’re with me.

The Wooden Floor          Click here for sound sample
Featuring Mary Henderson on vocal harmony, Tim Reese of Pig's Eye Landing on fiddle, Geoff Shannon on banjo, and Jason Kapel on bass

On the plains of Nebraska back in eighteen twenty three
By the banks of the Platte Bill fell in love with sweet Marie
By the time they were married, he’d prepared her a surprise
As they approached their brand-new house, he covered up her eyes
He turned the knob to open up the roughly finished door
When he removed his hand she saw the planks that made the floor

Chorus:
The first house in the county that could boast a floor of wood
And starting out they wanted nothing more
They built their lives upon that base with all the love they could
They built their lives upon that wooden floor

The neighbors came from miles around to marvel at the sight
Their floors of clay to them no longer seemed to be quite right
Bill helped them from his blacksmith shop as they built up the town
Marie raised seven children and had friends from all around
Though people came from far and wide of this you can be sure
The love they saw impressed them more than any wooden floor

Chorus

The floor was rough and kind of bumpy when Bill laid it there
But through the years it smoothed out fine with all their loving care
From time to time someone would trip and fall or stub a toe
They had some little problems but no one wanted to go
For in their hearts they knew there was no other place as good
They smoothed out problems in their lives just like that bumpy wood

Chorus

For more than fifty years they lived together happily
With birthdays, weddings, celebrations, friends and family
And when they died they left their home not thirty days apart
They left behind the feeling that they lived with just one heart
It started when Bill swept Marie right through that big front door
And she was so amazed to see those planks that made the floor

The first house in the county that could boast a floor of wood
And starting out they wanted nothing more
They built their lives upon that base with all the love they could
They built their lives upon that wooden floor
They built their lives upon that base with all the love they could
They built their lives upon that wooden floor
